Posted on the front page that basically ragtops suck and got a bigger response than I thought I would. Nothing hostile or anything, but damn.
Also, if you need to go topless, get a targa. Or T-tops for maximum 70s.
Also, just realized
that “ragtop”, sounds like a dated racial slur.

I don’t even like convertibles so I wonder how much hate I’d get.

nothing hostile?
you must have posted wrong
that doesnt sound right at all ;p

Targa’s suffer from a lot more wind noise/buffeting than typical convertibles though :(

I dislike convertibles, targa tops, and t-tops. I would drive one if that’s all that model offered and I liked the chassis, but otherwise I would avoid them 99% of the time.
There are exceptions. I actually like the looks of the E89 Z4. The engine is a gem too. But I don’t like the chassis enough to seriously consider one. My view of that model would be different if they had a lightweight true coupe version though. That would be a totally different matter

Not to pick on you, as I don’t even know what you actually wrote, but why does the internet demand that you declare something sucks instead of just allowing people to say “I don’t like these things and here’s why”? Everything must be an absolute declaration or judgement with no room for any disagreement.
Sorry, I’ll go back to protecting my yard.

I dismissed convertibles as well until, due to certain circumstances, I was stu ck driving one daily for about 10 months. Now that I'm back in a hardtop, I miss it.

Hate convertibles. My Miata has no soft top and the hard top is bolted in place.

They’re a love or hate thing, I think - I absolutely love them, but can understand why many people hate them. To each his own...

I drive a Miata with softop or removable hard top as the only option. Definitely thought that a soft top totally sucked while I was living in NJ. But now that I am in LA, it is no longer relevant and I think that just having no top at all is best. Having the soft top though is an added bonus if I happen to be out driving the 3 days a year that it rains and I didnt look up the weather ahead of time. I have an indoor garage at home so I can realistically never use the roof and just drive my other car when it actually rains.

*puts top down*
Oh hey, my car is fun and looks good now.

I’m conflicted when it comes to convertibles.
On one hand they often tend to be flexier and heavier than their hard top counterparts, and as such are inherently slower and worse handling. Also, I hate heat and sunburn easily, opting for shade and air conditioning instead. They’re probably more expensive to insure, worse at insulating.from sound and temperature , a wear item that can be cut or leak...
However. I’ve had an absolute blast in every convertible I’ve ever driven. From Miatas that I barely fit into, to s hitpile cavaliers, to an immaculate white over red foxbody, even Jeeps. Open air driving definitely has it's merits.

It’s funny that I thought that I would 100% agree with this. My plan was to buy a Miata, find a hard top a few weeks later, and then never take it off. But somehow my opinion flip flopped immediately and decided that top down driving was the best thing ever. It was at that moment that I understood why the Nissan Murano Cross cab existed. There are other nutjobs like me but have even odder taste.

Targa is best to me. I don’t like the publicity when driving a convertible, the targa is like an extra large sunroof but still has some privacy out the back. Miata RF gets it right (along with Porsche).

God i hate convertibles.
Everything about them pisses me off, other than the experience of being in one/driving one. That part is great.

Sunburn sucks. Drive a convertible on a warm, clear starry night. It'll change your life.

Ive tried with test drives but it just didn’t stick. Never walked away satisfied and found myself disappointed by chassis flex and nvh issues. Maybe that would change if I owned one, but who knows.

Oh yeah a test drive definitely would not suit well I think. Even the first week I had the Miata, I didnt bother putting the top down. I just hadn’t thought to try it and didnt want the added distraction while learning to drive manual. But NVH definitely does not go away lol. It’s funny because I thought it was like driving through outerspace when I bought my STi. A car not exactly known for being quiet or luxurious was as quiet as a space ship to me, so obviously my perspective is whack now. I think the best way to describe it is just that driving top down is “an experience”. I dont think owning one is for everyone, but its definitely something to rent for a week just to enhance a road trip. Anyone can thoroughly enjoy that!

Again, it’s basically what I said. What I really said was a question asking if any car looked good with the ragtop up and that I’ve never seen one.
![]() 07/23/2018 at 21:27 |

If only the RF was a motorized top and just something you click on/off like the ragtop of older models. The point of a Miata is low weight, after all.

Imagine it with a fastback style hardtop, though. Like a mini F-Type Coupe.
![]() 07/23/2018 at 21:28 |

But you get the open top fun of a ‘vert without (most of the time) losing the much better lines of the hardtop.

Again, no one was looking for blood or anything. Just got a bigger response than I’d figure.

Posting something like that? I have a hard time believing that no one was looking for blood. No other reasons to post a “something someone else likes sucks” post, TBH....
![]() 07/23/2018 at 22:00 |

Well that’s not really how I worded it, it’s just you could look into it and tell I was more or less saying that. Besides, judging
fro the responses I’m getting both here and there it was a very shared opinion.

They tried, it looks tall and awkward imho.
Some things just look better as a single form with a little windshield frame sticking up.

I didnt take personal offense.
I personally love targas but truth be told there is something very fun about looking over your shoulder and seeing everything. Targas aren’t quite the same.

Ahem.

The RF is about as motorized as motorized tops gets I think:
